THE ATC43 SOUTH ATLANTIC ROUTE SCENERY

This scenery package of the Air Transport Command South Atlantic contains fifteen WWII era airfields in Florida, the Carribbean, South America, Ascension Island and Africa. It also contains aircraft and traffic files for nine transport and combat AI aircraft with both early and late WWII paint schemes. There is also an extensive document section with wide-ranging information about the scenery and how to use it, a list of required and recommende scenery object libraries, special airfield briefing notes, WWII-style approach charts, samples of original WWII approach charts and narratives of real world ATC operations. Also included is an object library of vintage vehicles by John Stinstrom which will install automatically with ATC43.

This is a simple straightforward installation, although you must be comfortable with the Windows folder and file system, with .zip files and with manipulating files using Windows Explorer or another file manager. Personally, I always do a dummy run by unzipping downloaded files into a temporary folder where I can examine them, check for any virus infection, look at the documentation and be certain I really want to install whatever it is into my computer. After that, I find it best to always follow the developer's installation instructions exactly. If you will extend me that courtesy, it will seriously cut down on our email exchanges. A list of FAQs at the bottom of this file may be helpful to anyone who is unsure about installing addon scenery into Flight Simulator 9.

NOTE: The ATC_43.zip file MUST be extracted into a folder to maintain folder structures. If you just double-click on it, the .zip file will open but the internal files will not be displayed in the order. See FAQ #3 below the installation section.

INSTALLING ATC43 IN TWO EASY STEPS...

STEP ONE: INSERTING THE ATC43 SCENERY FILES INTO FS9

Extract "ATC_43.zip" into your FS9 folder. Afterward, you will see that the following things have happened...

1. A folder named "_ATC Documents" is now at the top (or very close to the top) of the file list in your FS9 folder. (You need to know that because the briefing notes, approach charts, etc, are inside that folder. After installation, feel free to move it somewhere else if you wish.)

2. Folders named "ATC43_Fields", "ATC AI Traffic Light" and "ATC AI Traffic Medium" have been placed inside your FS9 Addon Scenery folder.

3. Nine AI aircraft (A20, B24, B25, C46, C47, C54, C75, P38 and P40) have appeared in the Aircraft folder of your FS9 installation. At any time, you can delete any aircraft you do not want to see flying or parked in the scenery. By the way, they are all tucked into one category called AI Military so they won't clutter up your Select Aircraft menu.

4. "Vintage Vehicles2.bgl" has be placed in your FS9\Addon Scenery\scenery folder and seventeen textures of "Vintage..." cars and trucks have been placed in your FS9\Addon Scenery\texture folder.

So much for the ATC43 installation. Now open the "_ATC Documents" folder (as mentioned in item 1 above) and READ the Word document named "ATC43 Information" with particular attention to Pages 6 & 7. The screenshots will help you decide how much AI traffic you want to see at the airfields and how to make that happen. (It's easy to change it later if you want.)

STEP TWO: TELLING FS9 WHERE THE ATC43 SCENERY FILES ARE LOCATED

Start FS9. If it is already running, close it, then re-start it.

When the "SETTINGS" window opens, click on the "Scenery Library..." button in the lower left-hand corner to open the "SETTINGS - SCENERY LIBRARY" window.

Click on the "Add Area" button to open the "Select Scenery Directory" window.

Double-click on the "Addon Scenery" folder. Then click only once on the "ATC43_FIELDS" folder to highlight it. Click "OK." "ATC43_FIELDS" will then appear at the top of the scenery list with a red checkmark beside it.

Click on the "Add Area" button to open the "Select Scenery Directory" window again.

Double-click on the "Addon Scenery" folder. Then click only once on the "ATC AI Traffic Light" folder to highlight it. Click "OK." "ATC AI Traffic Light" will then appear at the top of the scenery list with a red checkmark beside it.

Click on the "Add Area" button to open the "Select Scenery Directory" window yet again.

Double-click on the "Addon Scenery" folder. Then click only once on the "ATC AI Traffic Medium" folder to highlight it. Click "OK." "ATC AI TrafficMedium" will then appear at the top of the scenery list with a red checkmark beside it.

When all three ATC43 files show at the top of the scenery list, use the mouse to de-select or select the "enabled" red checkmarks beside the two AI Traffic files if necessary, depending on how many AI planes you want to see in the scenery.

IMPORTANT: Verify that "ATC43_FIELDS" has a red checkmark beside it, i.e., that it is enabled.

Click "OK" at the bottom right of the window, which will send you back to the "SETTINGS" window. Click the "X" in the upper right corner to close that window. Then click "Yes" to close FS9.

The ATC43 scenery will be ready to use whenever you next start FS9. All the ATC43 runways, taxiways, ramps, AI planes and vehicles will be there, but if you don't already have some of the Calclassic object libraries in your computer, you won't see many buildings. If you haven't already done so, open the "ATC43 Information" document and review the "Scenery Required and Suggested" section that begins on page three.

NOTE: All of Tom Gibson's CalClassic sceneries have clear and detailed installation guides. Pay close attention to the order in which sceneries must be arranged in the FS9 Scenery List. (You can re-arrange the order wih the buttons on the right hand side of the window.) The ATC43_FIELDS scenery should always be high on the scenery list, above the CalClassic Core Library and the CalClassic Landclass files. It's a matter of the order in which FS9 loads and displays sceneries at startup, i.e., from the bottom up.

By the way, if you're wondering why I didn't use a super gee-whiz-bang automatic installer to save you all the installation trouble, there's a very good reason. There ain't no such animal to do the hard work. Whether you insert the files with an installer or my click-drag-extract method or sprinkle them with magic powder, we all have to manually enable those files inside FS9. Sorry, but you'll have to grumble to Bill Gates about that one.

At this point, it would be better for both of us if you could take the time to study all the material in the "_ATC43 Documents" folder. Every question I could think is answered in one or another of those reference items. That said, I may well have missed something, so if you have a problem you can't solve, email me and I'll try to help. Enjoy!

           FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS...

FAQ #1. "What is all this 'FS9' talk? I have FS2004 in my computer." ------ FS9 is FS2004. Microsoft changed its naming practice with FS9, but, in-house, all versions of Flight Simulator have had a FS6 or FS7 or FS8 or FSsomething designation.

FAQ #2. "Where is my FS9 folder?" ------ By default, FS9 installs itself to a folder named C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9. If it's not there and you forget where you installed it, try searching for a file named fs9.exe.

FAQ #3. "How do I 'extract' the ATC_43.zip file into a folder?" ------ In this case, you click ONCE on the "ATC_43.zip" file to highlight it. Then you hold the mouse cursor over the highlighted file name. RIGHT-click and hold the right button down while you move the cursor over on top of your FS9 folder name. Release the button.

FAQ #4. "Will this scenery work in FS2002 or FSX?" ------ It will probably work in FS2002, but I can't guarantee it. Not a chance in FSX, though.

FAQ #5. "I tried it but I don't want to keep it. How do I delete ATC43?" ------ First, you open FS9 and reverse the "enabling" process in STEP TWO. In other words, uncheck the three ATC boxes, then click "OK," then close FS9. With Windows Explorer, open your FS9\Addon Scenery folder and delete the three ATC43 folders. Open your FS9 folder and delete the file named "_ATC Documents." Open your FS9\Aircraft folder and delete the nine aircraft folders named "aia20," "aib24," "aib25," "aic46mil," "aic47," "aic54," "aic75," "aip38" and "aip40e." Open the FS9\Addon Scenery\scenery folder and delete the file named "Vintage Vehicles.bgl." Finally, open the FS9\Addon Scenery\texture folder and delete the seventeen files that begin with the word "Vintage."
